Ask HN: Has anyone had the deck stacked against them in arbitration? 2 by puglr | 0 comments on Hacker News. With respect to the arbitration terms found in any given Terms of Service, there are two competing ideas I've seen a lot on HN recently: 1) Those asserting arbitration is a scam or otherwise unfair. The company whose TOS you've signed is the one paying the arbitrator, after all. This system is designed for you to lose. 2) Those with personal anecdotes about going through arbitration, who had a decent-at-worst experience, and ended up winning. If there's one thing I've learned from the internet, it's that positive outcomes generate a light breeze, but negative outcomes generate a storm. If arbitration was inherently unfair -- at least as often as we seem to tell ourselves -- I'd think I'd see more anecdotes about it. So far I've seen zero. Ask HN: New job at BigCo. Everything has friction 187 by edmcnulty101 | 202 comments on Hacker News. Coming from smaller companies and startups just got a job at #BigCo in the Bay. The one thing I'm noticing is that it's miserable to work here because EVERYTHING has friction and takes days to get done and has to go through numerous teams and approvals just for the simplest stuff like a new VM or an SSL cert from their own in house CA. I get great satisfaction at work out of accomplishing things and this is just rediculous to the point of making me dislike working. To get anything done is emotionally exhausting. Anyone else dealt with this? Anyone have any type of jobs where friction is minimal?

I’m curious to hear from the larger community - I’ve mostly used it for completing mostly repetitive classwork (OCaml) and basic web dev (Django). It’s worked like a charm for the basics - I’d estimate speeding me up in terms of LOC written by 2-3x for sure. Any other input?

The list of things I have failed at my entire life is monstrous. I have failed my way to amazing engineering jobs and then failed out. Either by way of being managed out or by leaving before things got too bad. There was a time when I was fine with this. But now, with a family, I am having some real regrets. I have trained myself to be OK with procrastination in the moment. Always ready to be angry at myself afterword. I am now so self-critical that I get caught in worry loops that keep me doing nothing productive. I started seeing a therapist but it’s just embarrassing to fully say how I feel things are going and how deep this dysfunction actually goes.
